Pumps: variable-speed versus single-speed
Variable-speed pumps run at the exact speed needed for filtering, cleaning, or running water features, which cuts energy use significantly compared to older single-speed pumps that only run at full power. Most new pool equipment in Texas is variable-speed now, partly because the energy savings pay back the higher upfront cost within a few years given DFW electricity rates and long pump run times in summer. Many DFW cities and some HOAs also now require variable-speed pumps for new equipment installations.
