New Freeform Pool Build with Raised Spa and Boulder Waterfall in Fort Worth, TX

This family had an open acreage lot behind the house and nothing to swim in. We built a freeform gunite pool with a raised stone-clad spa, a boulder edge along the back, and a full broom-finish concrete patio around it.

What we found

  • Open pasture behind the house with no pool, patio, or utilities run
  • No shade structures or seating anywhere in the backyard
  • Grade fell away toward the field and needed to be set before decking
  • No gas, electric, or water stubbed out for pool equipment

The homeowner's goal

Build a natural-looking freeform pool with a spa and rock work that fits an open country lot, plus enough patio for furniture and shade.

What we did

  1. 1. Laid out and excavated the freeform shell and raised spa in native rock and clay
  2. 2. Set steel, plumbed the pool, spa, and skimmer lines, and ran electric to the equipment pad
  3. 3. Sprayed the gunite shell, raised spa dam wall, tanning shelf, and bench seating
  4. 4. Set river boulders along the back edge of the pool with mortared joints and hidden drainage
  5. 5. Clad the raised spa in stacked stone with cast concrete coping and a tiled spillway step down to the pool
  6. 6. Set waterline tile in the pool and glass mosaic tile in the spa
  7. 7. Formed and poured the broom-finish concrete patio with a colored border band
  8. 8. Applied the interior pebble finish, filled, balanced the water, and started the equipment

Results

  • Freeform pool and raised spa that reads as natural rock against an open field
  • Spa spillway keeps water moving and audible from the patio
  • Tanning shelf and benches give shallow seating for kids and adults
  • Wide concrete patio holds loungers, umbrellas, and dining furniture
  • Variable-speed equipment keeps operating cost low on a large water volume
We went from an empty field to the best part of our property. The spa spilling into the pool is what sold us on the design.
